The Buttered Tin - St. Paul (Lowertown)

We’ve been here multiple times but for some reason I’ve never done a review. Hit them up after our walk at the farmers market today. Had their fruit pie of the day - blueberry. OMG this was so good. Pie crust was so thin and flaky, the pie itself still was a little warm. Not overly sweet, was so good. For food I had the biscuits and gravy with the poached eggs. This was good, but the gravy was unfortunately not my favorite. There is onion and celery in the gravy which gives it a little odd flavor to me. Hubs had the burrito - said it was really good - only issue was that all the meat and beans were on one side and the eggs and rice were on the other. Brought home a couple of their day old cookies - these were so good!!!

Super impressed with the Buttered Tin after my first time here—it lived up to the hype! The delicious breakfast set us up for a wonderful day. I highly recommend the cinnamon roll; they’ve got the ooey gooey, fluffy, and chewy texture down to a science, and it still feels homemade. The Damn Good Breakfast Sandwich was also delicious—simple, but very well-executed. The breakfast burrito was huge, so be prepared if you order that. Service was friendly and quick! Overall, the atmosphere was cozy and memorable. The option to sit outside in the shade in Lowertown was very enjoyable on a Sunday morning in June. Based on aroma and what they had on display, it seems baked goods are their strong suit. Can’t wait to be back to try more of the menu, especially the lunch items like the pot roast sandwich. It actually wasn’t too busy when we went around 1pm: about a 5 minute wait in line to order. Please do yourself a favor and give The Buttered Tin a try if you’re considering!

The Buttered Tin is a blend of restaurant and bakery. The food is well-prepared, unique, and delicious! But the ordering process is uncomfortable on the busy weekends because you have to stand in line (upwards of 20 minutes) to place an order.

Average in every rubric I’m rating The Buttered Tin as average, which in no way is intended as negative, is just that to me, feels like one more breakfast spot as surely are many. Maybe there are baked or specialty items in the menu that qualify as hidden gems, but for a one-time visitor, neither the coffee, the pancakes, nor the salmon wrap, reached the memorable sweet spot however tasty they were. Would I recommend this place??? Well, if you happen to be around, yes!!! Nevertheless, if you’re planning on deviating from your route or schedule for coming to this place, maybe it’s not worth the bother. Anyhow, probably what really ground my gears was the sign letting customers know The Buttered Tin would no longer accept tips in lieu of a 20% surcharge. From a wheelchair user standpoint, I’m no fan of those places where you are forced to tip (because that’s what the surcharge is) for queuing and ordering first, and then having to find a table while carrying your coffee with nobody even caring to assist.

Definitely an awesome breakfast spot!! Lots of great options! And the staff were all SO kind! The food was a little pricey, but it was worth it. Excellent breakfast burrito and parfait. The pecan coffee cake was TO DIE FOR. The bathrooms were clean. The restaurant was quiet and calm. Definitely will be back!
