We stayed on site in one of the yurts and did the van tour. I cannot reccomend them enough! The yurt was fabulous and beyond comfortable. The van tour was fun and offered great nature views. We didn't get lucky with a moose sighting, but that's wildlife. Highly recommend ordering the food delivery if you stay in the yurts! Dinner was absolutely phenomenal and also really convenient after the van tour to have our meal ready for us.
We spent the prior day up from Bar Harbor doing a 'self guided' moose tour. We got some great photos and saw fantastic scenery but struck out in the Moose department.
We decided to make the trip back up country the next day and booked the afternoon 'Moose Safari'. Laura was our guide. She has led a very interesting life and had no qualms about sharing snippets of what brought her to this place at this time. Her stories were engaging.
The van was full and Brent (another reviewer) sat behind me. He was the only person on the van with a serious camera and everyone else was using their phones. It was great that Laura made the extra effort to get Brent out of the van for about 15 minutes of excellent photo time. Nobody was in a rush to move on. We were searching for Moose and we had two right there.
Interestingly, the mother Moose and daughter were about 75 yards away at first and over the next 10 minutes they moved to within 30 yards of the van. Excellent Encounter.
If you are heading to this area, be sure to book in advance. There are several outfitters in the region but things do book up fast.
We do recommend these folks. The tour was great.
We did make a couple suggestions to Laura.
1) WD-40 for the squeaky doors.
2) Wash the windows so guests can get clearer shots.
This tour met every expectation.. Our guide Laura lived a life that blessed her with a cross-section of expertise that allowed for informative answers to all questions. We opted for the afternoon tour which we knew was not ideal and she worked hard to find us our moose experience and succeeded. I also need to mention, I have a disability and almost missed my picture opportunities but she recognized my situation in a group of 10 and made sure I did not. Above and beyond on all levels, and worth more than some of those tours with higher price tags. Thank you so very much Laura, and Northeast Whitewater!
PS
Did I mention the awesome mid-trip surprise in-house baked treats??
The moose tour was awesome! We had to drive 2 hours in the fog and drizzle, but got there early (0545 hrs.). Three people did not show, but our guide called them and waited an extra 15 minutes. Most businesses would not have waited, and those people better not complain! I was so excited for the tour that I did not catch our guide's name, but she was originally from California. She was very informative and interesting. Not to mention her driving skills on those crazy logging roads!!!
The adventure part is actually looking for a moose. We got to see a fox jumping around, catching prey. Then we got to a pond, walked to the edge, and stumbled upon a moose eating!! Holy cow, literally! She was beautiful and only a few feet away. The guide backed us up and showed us city kids from Toledo, Ohio, how to be respectful. The cow walked in front of us and up into the woods. What a high!
I know moose are elusive, and they tell you not to expect to see any but what luck!
Thanks for the tour, the brownie, and the coffee it was fun with a moose on top.
Wonderful tour! Definitely recommended, our group saw two moose two foxes, two deer and a loon. Very amazing wildlife encounter experience, and our tour guide is very nice and informative!
