We stayed here on a road trip to view the Monarch butterflies nearby. It was fabulous. Very reasonable price, comfortable, quiet and good location just a few blocks from the amazing central mercado in Zitacuaro.
The place is nice and quiet, breakfast was ok, chilaquiles not so much, fruit was awesome, my room smelt like old mans clothes (im guessing its the old wood in the furniture) but it was comfy, theres only one tiny window so air flow is non existent, parking lot is small i dont know what happens when the hotel is full of guests cuz i bet you cant fit more than 5 suvs in here, internet is ok, not slow not fast, bathroom water pressure and temperature were perfect, tv has lots of channels, theres no iron in the room you need to ask for it, they put 2 bottles of water in your room, small ones but quality brand, you need to call the front desk everytime you need to leave the hotel so they open the garage door for you, the same applies when you arrive.
Staff is very polite.
AVOID THIS HOTEL LIKE THE PLAGUE: MONEY ‘DISAPPEARED’ FROM MY ROOM AND THE OWNERS SMUGLY DISMISSED ME
EVITA ESTE HOTEL: DINERO ‘DESAPARECIÓ’ DE MI HABITACIÓN Y LOS PROPIETARIOS NO HACEN NADA, SOLO ME BURLARON
Please, read this review and then look elsewhere for accommodation in Zitácuaro. First I should say the hotel itself was mediocre but not terrible; just marred by defects such as thin, scratchy towels and a breakfast that comprised no more than watery coffee, a little bowl of bland fruit and a couple of pieces of bread: ie, what you’d expect from a cheap hostel, not a proper hotel.
But the real reason to steer well clear of this hotel is as follows. When I arrived with my girlfriend I had a lot of cash on me – more than I wanted to keep carrying around – so I removed MX$2500 (approx. US$132: more than double the cost of our stay, and a lot of money to me) from my wallet and left it under a phone directory in our room. The next morning we checked out to go and see the butterflies, and I forgot that I’d left that money there until we were already in the reserve, where I had no cell reception all day and so couldn’t call the hotel to let them know. (There is no way I could have been mistaken about any of this, as before arriving at the hotel I’d withdrawn 6000 pesos, of which 3000 was made up of six 500-peso notes. The bills I’d removed from my wallet were five of the 500-peso notes. I still only had the one of these I’d kept.)
On returning to Zitácuaro after a lovely day in the reserve, my girlfriend and I returned to the hotel so she could pick up a bag she’d left with them and I could collect the money I’d forgotten. The staff member at the desk led me back up to the room, which had been cleaned in the interim but was unoccupied, and I checked under the phone directory. Nothing there, or anywhere else in the room. The staff said nothing from the room had been turned in by the cleaner. I asked if they could try to find out what had happened. We were then kept waiting for around half an hour while they smirked and joked, visibly not taking the situation seriously.
Eventually, they put me on the phone with a women and then a man who seemed to be the hotel’s proprietors. All I could get out of these people was a profoundly smug-voiced, sneering repetition of the insistence that they ‘only employed the most trustworthy staff’, or something to that effect, and irrelevant mentions of the fact that they had cameras around the hotel (but obviously not in the rooms). At no point did they voice any concern over the ‘disappearance’ of my money: all they did was deny any possible responsibility on their part or that of their employees. They didn’t offer to look into it. When I asked them flat-out what they proposed to do to resolve the situation, they mockingly replied “absolutely nothing”. At this point I lost my temper and left. I don’t think I’ve ever been so angry in my life.
This was all the worse because that day was my girlfriend’s birthday. I’d planned the trip to Zitácuaro and the butterfly reserve as a surprise for her birthday, and the visit to the reserve had been entirely wonderful, and we were both feeling very happy. Then this incident with the hotel soured the day for both of us, meaning that not only did I lose what for me is a very substantial sum of money, but, worse, my girlfriend’s birthday was spoiled.
The only good I can see coming out of all this is if my review of this hotel means other people avoid it, and thus avoid the risk of having their money ‘disappear’ and then the owners treating them with utter contempt. FOR YOUR OWN SAKE, PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS GODAWFUL HOTEL.
The hotel is very beautiful, is like a Oasis. Theron staff is so friendly. The rooms are confortable.
The Hotel has just a problem, that is far from Zitacuaro City.
The hotel room was clean and cozy but there's a street right next to the room so we could hear all th e noise from cars, motorcycles, people walking all night long.
