The lack of professionalism started right after my daughter completed the assessment where the man working on-site said, "Okay, bye. We are done." He was ready for us to leave. We were confused and had to ask him (he was waiting for us to leave) what is the next step, when do we get assessment results, when will tutoring start, etc. He then answered but then started complaining to my husband about all the rules with the Sylvan franchise/business structure or something like that. Nice first impression.
When the tutor was out sick, I had to email Sylvan (not tutor) multiple times to reschedule that session. It did not happen. The following week our tutor then had to tutor two students at the same time (another student's regular session and my daughter's make-up). It is my understanding that sessions are supposed to be one-on-one. It was difficult for the tutor to cover much material as the tutor had to switch back and forth between screens and students. It was not a group lesson. Other student just sat there and listened to another student bring tutored who was not in the same grade. I have the feeling the tutors receive little support from Sylvan. The tutor should have had help with the make-up sessions.
When I canceled, I emailed the Owasso Sylvan to cancel. I think they oversee multiple locations. They said they would tell tutor right away. Well, they didn't and she was calling me concerned as we were a no show. She was holding that spot for us so was disappointed that they did not tell her. I did not have her personal contact information until then so couldn't have told her myself. I then emailed them as a courtesy/FYI to say that she didn't get that message in case they had her wrong contact information.
Fast forward after the Holidays, I had another tutor call me for a no show. This tutor also had us her on our weekly schedule for tutoring. This is not the tutors fault but instead it reflects on Sylvan's poor communication with both tutors and parents/students.
Poor communication, unprofessional, disorganized. Long story short, don't do it.
Note: Our school paid for the sessions so it was free for us. If I was a paying customer, I may have just canceled after the assessment.
Poor service and horrible communication. Took 5 weeks and multiple calls and emails to get an assessment scheduled. Day before the assessment I had to email them for the Zoom info. We logged into the Zoom call and wait 30 minutes and assessor never joined. Over a month wasted and my son still had no tutor! Sent an email with my sentiment and no one bothered to call or respond Will never trust them to teach my son if they can’t do simple administrative tasks.
My daughter has struggled in math the past few years. We found that it was because there were steps that she didn't understand. In a classroom this isn't always noticed and class time is scheduled to keep moving forward. At Sylvan my daughter is being taught each step in math and she's not able to move on to the next until she's mastered the one before it. This ensures that she'll be able to keep building on her knowledge all the way from basic math to calculus. Her math grade has gone up in the 3 months she's attended and we're so grateful.
My daughter began Sylvan reading at below grade level and soured to at grade level over a few months. We tried another tutoring business but my daughter didn’t thrive as well as she has at Sylvan. The people at this branch are also very friendly and I think that has a lot to do with why my daughter likes it so much!
If your child is struggling to keep up in class and needs an extra boost to propell them forward academically I highly recommend bringing them to Sylvan Learning Center. Tisha and the staff of trachers are amazing. My child actually likes the time he spends at Sylvan unlike some other programs we've tried.
